Save Our Seine (SOS) is a community based stewardship group whose mandate is to protect, preserve and enhance the Seine River Environment within the City of Winnipeg. An important objective of SOS is to promote the development of an ethic of environmental stewardship with local citizens through leadership, public education and participatory activities.

More and more Canadians are living in urban centres; this increases the need to protect the remaining natural urban environment for the benefit of even more citizens. These natural areas are priceless and will be treasured by future generations.

The purpose of this site is to inform citizens concerned about the Seine River and issues affecting it. This website is also a tool to enable citizens to protect, preserve, enhance and enjoy their Seine River Greenway

Prairie Pathfinders Seine River Hike:

Prairie Pathfinders are having their Seine River hike on Saturday, January 16, 2010. The 90 to 120 minute walk will start and end at Dakota Community Club and is expected to include nearby sections of the Seine River in its sheltered valley. After the walk participants will be provided with a delicious hot meal catered by St. Boniface's noted Paladin Restaurant, followed by presentation from the St. Vital Historical Society and Save Our Seine.

The hike starts at 10:30 AM at Dakota Community Center. Participants can use the Community Club parking lot which can be accessed from Dakata Street.

Save Our Seine will give 10 minute talk about recent achievements & future plans and host an information/merchandise table. The St. Vital Historical Society will be making an interpretive presentation of some aspects of St. Vital's history, especially as it relates to the Seine River area.

Registration fee is $32. To register online please go to: http://www.prairiepathfinders.mb.ca/

SOS invites its supporters to participate in this walk, the first event of our 20th Anniversary Year.

IKO Site Remediation project

Important Construction Update from Conestoga Rovers and Associates : The public information flyer stated that we would be operating at the site from Monday to Saturday.  However, based on the weather delays that we have had and to ensure the excavation gets completed this year, we are going to start working on Sundays, within the allowable hours as per the Neighbourhood Liveability By-Law.  The remedial contractor may start working Sundays starting as early as Sunday August 23rd. For further information please contact Lindsay Shepherd at 1-800-265-6102 x 2257 or 421archibald@craworld.com

Please note there is a disruption to the St. Boniface trail as part of the IKO site remediation project. While it is unfortunate that large chunks of river bottom forest have to be removed behind the, it is part of the project to remove contaminated soil caused by the old shingle site. The site is one of the largest and most seriously contaminated in Manitoba and has to be cleaned to restore the river to a healthy condition. Contaminated material was found in all of the locations that are being worked on.  IKO who are doing the work will rehabilitate areas that have been disturbed once the contaminate material is removed, but of course it will take years to return to its former splendor. See the link above for more information.
