Manitoba's
former
lieutenant-governor
has
joined
advocates
of
a
planned
Seine
River
parkway
in
asking
City
Hall
to
back
off
a
proposal
to
build
new
St.
Vital
bridges.
The
group
is
concerned
the
planned
bridges
will
put
people
and
wildlife
at
risk.
Yvon
Dumont
and
other
members
of
the
Save
Our
Seine
group
told
council's
riverbank
committee
this
week
the
planned
riverbank
"greenway"
will
be
hurt
if
bridges
are
built
across
the
creek
at
Southglen
Boulevard
and
Warde
Avenue.
Culverts
through
existing
Seine
River
spans
at
the
Perimeter
Highway
and
Bishop
Grandin
Boulevard
have
posed
dangers
for
boaters,
said
group
president
Jules
Legal.
"In
any
of
these
culvert
style
bridges,"
Legal
said,
"if
you
have
high
water
and
someone
capsizes
you're
dead.
That's
it."
The
city
has
only
long-range
proposals
for
the
small
crossings,
Coun.
Jenny
Gerbasi
(Fort
Rouge)
said,
adding
there's
no
plan
to
build
anytime
soon.
In
addition
to
muskrats,
beaver
and
blue
herons,
the
group
is
also
concerned
about
keeping
the
river
area
clear
for
an
interpretive
centre
marking
the
site
of
a
mill
owned
by
Louis
Riel's
father.
The
group
has
raised
$27,000
toward
the
project.The
cost
of
acquiring
the
land
for
the
entire
parkway
could
be
up
to
$4
million,
members
said.
