-
A
compromise
is
being
crafted
at
Winnipeg
City
Hall
to
satisfy
people
concerned
about
a
housing
development
in
the
southeast
part
of
the
city.
The
Save
our
Seine
committee
has
been
fighting
a
proposed
bridge
across
the
Seine
River,
fearing
it
would
hurt
natural
land
that
could
be
used
as
a
park.
The
bridge,
which
would
extend
from
Southglen
Boulevard,
would
connect
St.
Anne's
Road
with
a
new
subdivision
south
of
John
Bruce
Road.
To
ease
the
group's
concerns,
the
city's
executive
policy
committee
is
recommending
the
city
put
up
$1
million
to
purchase
and
protect
Seine
River
forest
area.
A
further
$600,000
could
be
forthcoming
from
the
city
if
private
groups
can
come
up
with
similar
funds.
An
independent
study
on
the
impact
of
the
bridge
would
also
be
undertaken.
The
president
of
the
Save
Our
Seine
group,
Jules
Legal,
calls
it
an
important
step
forward,
although
he
says
a
lot
of
work
still
needs
to
be
done.
The
proposal
is
still
subject
to
approval
by
Winnipeg
city
council.
