The city approved a plan yesterday that could see an endangered
33-hectare parcel of riverbank land turned into a park.A portion
of the forest on the east side of the Seine River between John
Bruce and Four Mile roads in south Winnipeg was in danger of being
flattened to make room for a 700-home subdivision.
But city council approved a complicated strategy yesterday that
could see the forest purchased by the city and community groups
for roughly $3 million.
Under the proposal, the city would acquire 13.3 hectares of the
forest for $495,000, while the developer would contribute three
hectares as part of the normal land-dedication process that accompanies
large-scale developments.
The city is prepared to spend another $1 million to acquire a
portion of the remaining 16.5 hectares at $65,000 per acre (.40
hectare), about $1.6 million short of the total cost.
However, if community groups succeed in raising $1 million, the
city will kick in another $600,000 toward the land acquisition.
