Fight over new St. Vital bridge heats up

This is a critical week for a group trying to save a patch of urban forest. Tuesday night, city councillors will vote on a development plan for the area at a meeting of the Riel community committee - and members of Save our Seine will be there to try to stop bridge from being built in the middle of park they're proposing for the area.

Save Our Seine (SOS) is trying to stop the developer of the second phase of the Royalwood subdivision from building a bridge near Southglen Boulevard and Ste. Anne's Road in St. Vital. The group wants to build the Bois des Esprits park along the river in the same area.

Tomorrow, SOS will rally at a meeting of the Riel community committee, where city councillors will discuss a development plan that examines a number of bridge options for the area. The report supports the idea of a park, but also recommends the controversial bridge be built, in part because the city wouldn't have to pay for it.

Save Our Seine members say the bridge at Southglen isn't needed because a plan is already in place to build another bridge 500 meters away at Warde Avenue. SOS spokesman Dave Danyluk says the report looked more at the traffic implications of the bridge than the environmental implications.

"That could be a real detriment to the overall quality of the forest," he says. "We would like to make sure that the city councillors have that fuller [view], so the shortcomings of the report and also the things that were omitted could be considered on their decision-making."

On Monday, Danyluk and other members of the group are hoping to secure some support from the province, which co-owns the land with the developer.

"If they're made aware of the plight and the concern that we have, they should be able to come up with some really suitable options to rescue this forest or avert undue damage," says Danyluk.

Save Our Seine is trying to raise $600,000 to purchase 80 acres of forest for the Bois des Esprits park. Danyluk says if the bridge goes through, it's going to be difficult for his group to raise money for a fragmented park.
