A
developer
will
be
allowed
to
build
a
760-home
subdivision
along
the
Seine
River
in
St.
Vital.
On
Tuesday,
the
Riel
community
committee
unanimously
approved
the
Ladco
Homes
development,
including
the
construction
of
a
controversial
bridge
over
the
Seine
from
Southglen
Boulevard.
The
environmental
advocacy
group
Save
Our
Seine
supported
the
housing
development
but
opposed
the
bridge,
arguing
it
will
compromise
a
forest
along
the
river.
"The
portion
that
they're
going
to
build
the
access
and
the
road
through
represents
only
a
small
portion
of
what
will
be
lost,"
says
SOS
president
Jules
Legal.
"The
impact
on
the
whole
southern
portion
will
be
devastating.
It's
now
an
isolated
island
that
would
not
support
any
through
traffic
of
wildlife,
and
so
on."
Alan
Borger,
president
of
the
Ladco
Homes,
concedes
the
bridge
will
separate
10
per
cent
of
the
forest
from
the
other
80
per
cent,
but
he
says
many
other
aspects
of
the
Royalwood
II
development
stand
out
for
their
environmental
friendliness.
"A
number
of
experts
were
produced
today,
[including]
a
Dr.
Badyk,
and
he
commented
on
our
plan:
he
said
that
in
his
opinion,
it
could
well
form
a
case
study
and
be
held
out
as
a
model,
as
ecologically
sensitive
development,"
says
Borger.
A
section
of
the
Seine
River
will
be
re-routed
to
accommodate
the
bridge;
work
on
the
river
is
expected
to
begin
in
January.
Re-routing
of
a
portion
of
the
Seine
to
accommodate
the
Construction
of
the
bridge
itself
will
begin
in
the
spring.
