The Winnipeg Sun, Editorial
December 12, 2002
For the sake of The Sun's integrity, I hope the editorial
New bridge a boon was simply a poor effort that omitted many important
issues and not a deliberate attempt to be perceived as a supporter
of Winnipeg business.
Even though a bridge at Warde Avenue is planned and has not been
contested, Ladco claimed the development couldn't proceed without
the proposed bridge at Southglen Boulevard. This means there will
be two bridges a few hundred metres apart. You also make no comment
about other potential and more commercial sites for a bridge along
St. Anne's Road or other options that might preserve a natural
habitat area and prevent an excess of vehicle traffic on Southglen
Boulevard, a residential street never designed for twinning and
which has many houses fronting it, as well as a K-8 school and
two day cares.
I suggest that before you jump on the bandwagon of any Winnipeg
business endeavours you take the time to understand the concerns
from both sides or at least provide some form of evidence you
have been diligent in your thought process. You might even decide
to drive down Southglen Boulevard and imagine the traffic growth
as if it were your front yard. Do some math and factor other traffic
increases from the Royalwood subdivision and then call Earth Tech
or Ladco to see how close your numbers are.
But that's likely not your concern because, like Ladco and the
city councillors involved, it seems impossible for you to appreciate
any quality of life issues not measured purely in dollars affecting
the economy.
