A recent tree planting and cleanup event organized by members of the Save Our Seine environmental group is just one of many initiatives the group has been working on. Last weekend's cleanup event will be followed by much more work in the coming months, said Save Our Seine coordinator David Danyluk.

In July, Save Our Seine members will be working with four Quebec youth, who will be in the city as part of the Katimavik program.

The young Quebeckers will be spending four weeks helping Save Our Seine members (with) cleanup and preservation efforts in the Old. St. Boniface area.

Tree caging is another project in the works, said Danyluk. The caging is needed to help protect trees in the Seine River area from beavers. Danyluk also said Save Our Seine members have been working with Martha Barwinski from the Coalition to Save the Elms, to help raise awareness about Dutch Elm disease control s well as other threats to trees in yards and forests in the Seine River Greenway.

Save Our Seine members will also be continuing their efforts to raise money toward the purchase and (preservation) of Bois-des-esprit, a section of the Seine river Forest. The group's fundraising efforts include selling T-shirts featuring the phrase "A River Lies Waiting To Be Discovered."

The environmental group will soon have a new president as well. President Jules Legal will be finishing his term as president and will be turning over the president's title to Save Our Seine member Bev Sawchuk.
