Members of the Save our Seine group are continuing to raise funds
to purchase and preserve a section of a beloved local forest known
as Bois-des-esprits.
The forest is located along the Seine River in the area of St.
Anne’s Road, between Bishop Grandin Boulevard and Warde Avenue.
Save our Seine president Bev Sawchuk said more than $110,000
has been raised so far toward the preservation project. Just over
half a million dollars still needs to be raised by Dec. 31, 2003
to purchase the forest. In an effort to meet that goal, as well
as raise awareness about the project, Save our Seine members will
be at St. Vital Centre Oct. 4 and 5 during mall hours, said Sawchuk.
“People will have an opportunity to find out more about Bois-des-esprits,”
she said.
SOS members will also be accepting donations toward the preservation
project.
A further event is planned Oct. 18 to help raise awareness about
the forest and SOS’s efforts to preserve it, said Sawchuk. “On
that day, we’re inviting people to come and walk through the forest
and experience it themselves.”
Sawchuk, who lives near the forest, said it is a “jewel” that
not everyone knows about. She said the area is a haven for wildlife,
from deer to geese.
Sawchuk said SOS members are pleased with the support the project
has received from people in the community, but there is still
much more money to be raised by Dec. 31. “We’re a small volunteer
group and there’s only so much we can do.”
Sawchuk said SOS members are hoping the province will provide
funds for the preservation project as well. Save our Seine members
have garnered support for the forest preservation project from
several organizations and individuals, including wildlife artist
Robert Bateman, who donated $50 toward the project and has challenged
all Manitobans to meet or beat his donation.
