Winnipeggers can only hope that the Ghost of Christmas
Future takes a few members of the provincial government this week
for a preview of the different futures available to the City of
Winnipeg.
One reveals a Winnipeg that sprawls outward into
faceless suburban houses, while trashing Class "A" ecosystems
in the process. The other looks forward to preserving a thriving
forest within city limits, which in turn creates a livable and
sustainable community.
A single decision by Dec. 31 could make all the
difference -- protecting Winnipeg's Bois-des-Esprits forest. Saving
this forest will not require extensive investment, as the province
could easily donate its 38 per cent of the property to the cause
and negotiate a fair price for the remainder of the land. The
City of Winnipeg and Mayor Glen Murray deserve kudos, as they
have already offered $1 million -- along with an additional $600,000
in matching funds -- to see the deal through. Citizens, businesses
and organizations have raised another $115,000, all showing a
strong desire to keep this area in its natural state.
By making the right decision this week, the Doer
government will have reason to look back with pride on its good
judgment for listening to local government, business and citizen
groups. The Bois-des-Esprits forest along the Seine River is certainly
a gift worth giving -- and it comes at the price of a stocking
stuffer.
