The Winnipeg Sun
A river stewardship group asked the Manitoba Floodway Authority yesterday to replace the mechanism by which the Seine River crosses the floodway when it rebuilds the ditch over the next few years.
Save Our Seine made a presentation to the Clean Environment Commission yesterday arguing the siphon system blocks out fish and allows too little water into the Winnipeg portion of the Seine River.
David Danyluk, of Save Our Seine, told the commission the syphon eliminates natural "flushing" that would revitalize and stabilize the riverbank.
Alf Poetker, an engineer who is consulting Save Our Seine, estimated the new crossing would cost at least $5 million.
Doug McNeil, vice-president of hydraulics for the Manitoba Floodway Authority, said the MFA would consider the proposal but made no firm decision.
