Concerned St. Vital residents are continuing their drive
to clean up the Seine River. After an initial information meeting
Sept. 5, the Save Our Seine Residents' committee was formed. That
committee has now elected block captains and volunteers to help
co-ordinate a citizens' cleanup of the river, said Peg Venables,
chairperson of the Save Our Seine Residents Committee.
Along with the help of local girl guides and the Manitoba Naturalist
Society, volunteers have planned a cleanup of the river to take
place 9:00 a.m. to noon Oct. 13, Venables said. The cleanup is
designed to remove items that have been dumped in the river. Volunteers
are asked to wear rubber boots and gloves and to bring a rake.
Three marshalling areas have been set up to coordinate cleanup
volunteers. The three marshalling areas are located at Morier
Park, 221 Egerton Rd., and at Egerton and Blenheim Road Venables
said the cleanup is a start to cleaning up the Seine while concerned
residents wait for government action. "We're trying to clean out
the junk. This is something we can do now," she said.
The group plans to meet with representatives from the three levels
of government to address the Seine River cleanup issue, she said.
Meanwhile, residents are going to do as much as they can to restore
the river to its original beauty, she said. "By doing this I think
we're demonstrating we're really doing all we can do." The rest,
said Venables is up to government.

deplorable. The recently formed Save Our Seine residents committee
is asking volunteers to grab their rubber gloves, rubber boots
and rakes to help out with a Seine River cleanup planned for Oct.
13.
