October 18, 2003
Every fall for the last thirteen years SOS has invited
citizens to pitch in and help clean up a part of the Seine River
Environment. This year the Board decided to invite people to see
the forest - many for the first time. The Board of Directors of
SOS understood that this may be the last time for citizens to
discover and experience the most sensitive and diverse ecosystem
in the City of Winnipeg.
The afternoon of October 18 was a chance for the
public to experience the pristine beauty of the Bois-des-esprits
in St. Vital, near John Bruce Park. The sunny Autumn day was enjoyed
about 300 people, many of whom had not previously known of the
forest's existence. They were invited to join larger groups as
SOS volunteers guided a walk through the pristine A-quality habitat,
and learned about the forest's significance, both environmentally
and historically. SOS's volunteers enjoyed hearing visitors relate
their wonderful experiences and expressions of surprise that the
forest is in the City!

The event was topped off with a display, silent
auction, sale of SOS t-shirts, and a free BBQ. Our thanks to everyone
who signed a postcard
to Premier Doer, asking the Province to protect this area
for future generations. Thank You World of Water (St. Anne's Rd)
for quenching our thirst at all our events!
Many people suggested that we host the same event
next year because they had such a great time! SOS was delighted
with the enthusiastic response to the first "Experience the Bois-des-esprits"
day, and hopes to hold this type of event annually along the Seine.
We welcome your comments.
Special Thanks to all our wonderful volunteers Jules
& Gladys on the BBQ, volunteer guides, Martha Barwinsky (Coalition
to Save the Elms), Jerome Marhcildon, Roy St. Lawrence, Cheryl
Heming (City
Naturalist) and Constance Menzies. SOS's trail organizers
and guides David Venema, Denis DePape and Serge LaRochelle.
THANKS TO ALL WHO CAME OUT AND DISCOVERED AND ENJOYED
THE FOREST!!
