Manitoba News Release

Water Stewardship Minister Christine Melnick and Health Minister Theresa Oswald today presented a cheque for $18,000 to Save Our Seine River Environment Inc. to support the group's work in protecting the Seine River.

Save Our Seine (SOS) will use the funding to formalize and expand the organization's role by creating an operating agency to be the primary contact for Seine River issues and to be responsible for planning and projects on public lands along the length of the Seine River.

"The funding is part of a round of project grants totalling $108,500 to support research organizations, educational opportunities and water related projects," said Melnick. "The fund is one of many provincial initiatives to improve water resources and help change the way Manitobans think about protecting this valuable resource."

"We are pleased to provide the funding to the Save Our Seine organization that has made great strides in cleaning the riverbank and protecting the river," said Oswald. "This grant will help the organization expand its role in caring for public lands along the Seine River."

"We thank the province for backing Save Our Seine at such a significant time in our 17-year history," said Tammy Rutherford, vice-president of Save Our Seine River Environment. "This support allows SOS the chance to take advantage of a monumental opportunity made possible by the City of Winnipeg's Red Tape Commission. The commission strongly recommends allowing organizations like SOS to look after our community's natural environments. This represents a landmark change in urban environmental management and leadership."

The $350,000 Water Stewardship Fund assists projects focused on maintaining and improving Manitoba's water, wetlands, shoreline areas and aquatic habitats.

Applications to the fund can be made by local governments, conservation districts, private and non-profit organizations and businesses, industries, educational institutions, Aboriginal organizations, and community and youth groups.
