Grassland Naturalization

The Field of Dreams is on a bend of the river at
the east end of Beliveau Rd. This site is a former City of St.Vital
Dump and is bare except for non-native grasses and weeds. The
Seine River borders seventy-five percent of the Field. The objective
is to recreate a healthy 'buffer' between the Seine River's banks
and the 'upland' field. This new urban forest and habitat will
take years to become established.

Last year volunteers a
couple of hundred trees which required digging a hole, adding
top soil to the poor soil there, planting the tree, surrounding
it with a weed blanket, covering the blanket with wood chips and
then watering it several times. A lot of hands-on care happily
supplied by local residents, SOS volunteers, cadets, scouts, students,
families, local politicians etc. This year 12 Katimavik volunteers
showed up and stayed until the bitter end - despite the dark skies,
cold wind and heavy rain!
The tiny trees are also tagged with pink flagging
tape so they can all be spotted in the tall grass when SOS's Urban
Green Team waters them throughout the summer.
This year was
a repeat of the same. In addition SOS ordered larger containerized
stock. These larger trees will have a better chance of getting
established. They also visually add to the image of the forest
to come.
Many native plant species of various sizes were
planted all along the several acre patch, which follows the riverbank.

A very special highlight was a contribution made
by The Winnipeg Game and Fish Association to the Bois-des-esprits
[Bde Project] Fundraising Campaign. Mr. Al Mackling (former provincial
Minister) with Vera Heimbach made a contribution on behalf of
Winnipeg Game and Fish. Their contribution will be doubled by
the City and used to purchase the remaining acres of forest (planted
by Mother Nature).

SOS would like to thank Manitoba
Hydro's Forest Enhancement Program for their generous support
to help make the recovery of the Field of Dreams into a reality.
Their investment into this new urban forest will be appreciated
for generations of Manitobans. THANK YOU!!
SOS would like to thank the Robin's Donuts on St.
Anne's for the donuts and bagels for the volunteers. The World
of Water on St. Anne's again supplied SOS with water (for the
volunteers not the trees!). And lastly IGA also on St. Anne's
helped out by providing hot dogs and buns for the BBQ! SOS and
the volunteers really appreciate it!
See you at next year's Greening Event!
