Many trail users in North St. Boniface have contacted
SOS wanting to know what happened to the trail. As many of you
may be aware, a very large home has been built where it seems
the trail leads. This has confused many southbound trail users
as they emerge from the forest and are led directly to the basement
of a three-story home. This 'new development' has caught SOS by
surprise too!
Do you go left or right? The traditional trail
actually continues along the riverbank.
SOS is now working with the City to create a linkage to (and
from) Youville Street. However, the linkage is the responsibility
(and cost too) of the developer. Despite the urging of SOS and
our offer to volunteer this year's Urban Green Team, the linkage
could not go ahead this summer. Sadly in the developer's agreement
with the City, no time-line is inserted requiring the trail connection
be completed by a certain date. For now SOS urges all trail users
to avoid trespassing near the private property.
There will also be a wall or dike built by the homeowner
between the home and the river (to protect it from flooding) that
may also create further difficulties (and confusion) for trail
users continuing along the trail.
SOS will keep you updated and work hard over the
winter to ensure that the trail is more practical and user-friendly
for next season!
