Buckthorn Removal in Kavanagh Park

European Buckthorn is one of the most destructive invasive plants spreading through Winnipeg’s urban forests and river corridors. Originally introduced from Europe as an ornamental hedge plant, it now aggressively crowds out native trees, shrubs, and wildflowers that local birds, pollinators, and wildlife depend on. Dense thickets of Buckthorn block sunlight from reaching the forest floor, weaken biodiversity, disrupt natural regeneration, and leave our green spaces less healthy and less resilient over time. Along the Seine River Greenway, Buckthorn has become a major threat to the ecological health of the river corridor.
Removing Buckthorn can be hard work, but it is one of the most important things we can do to help restore native habitat and protect the long-term health of the Urban Seine River. Every stem removed creates more space for native plants, healthier forests, better wildlife habitat, and stronger ecological resilience for future generations. Community stewardship truly makes a difference. When volunteers come together to remove invasive species, they are not simply clearing brush. They are actively helping important ecological zones recover and strengthening the health of the riparian forest for years to come.
