Feeding wildlife prohibited following bylaw update

Feeding wildlife within Winnipeg is now be prohibited as of July 1.

The City of Winnipeg has established new rules that prohibit feeding of all wildlife, with the exception of birds. These new rules come in the form of updates to the Responsible Pet Ownership Bylaw, which also adds further protections for pets.

The feeding of wildlife has been an ongoing concern for us at SOS, as it puts wildlife at risk. In particular, feeding can cause health issues for wildlife, such as when the food being offered does not align with their physiology. For example, feeding high-carb foods (e.g. fresh vegetables or hay) to deer in the winter can cause them a host of health problems since their digestive system adjusts to whatever is their natural diet for the given time of year.

Thanks to the City of Winnipeg for making these important changes!
