On May 25, 2020, the Manitoba Government announced that Save Our Seine will be receiving the funds from the Building Sustainable Communities Fund needed for an accessible dock, a major component of the Seine River Greenspace Enhancement Project.
Representatives from various levels of government included MLA Rochelle Squires, Minister of Municipal Relations, MLA Andrew Smith, and City Councillor Brian Mayes who has also provided funding from his ward.
Representatives from SOS included Board President, Laurie Ringaert, Past-President: Denis Gautron, Board Director: Isabelle Bertazzo and Executive Director: Michele Kading.
Funding will enable the installation of Winnipeg's first accessible canoe/kayak dock, allowing community members with various abilities, families and those new to water craft to enjoy the waters of the Seine River by canoe or kayak. The dock is to be installed near the John Bruce bridge.
Along with this funding, other sources of funding for the Accessible Dock have included: Winnipeg Councillor Brian Mayes, Mountain Equipment Co-op, the Winnipeg Foundation, the Thomas Sill Foundation, and the Blennerhassett Family Foundation.
In addition to the dock, the Greenspaces Enhancement Project also includes many trail enhancements, the installation of an interpretive node, and the conversion of 1,200 square meters of turf grass along the Louis Riel Sr. Trail to native prairie.
In the video below, Michele Kading speaks about the Greenspaces Enhancement Project and the value of having funding available for such projects through programs such as the Conservation Trust.
