River Keeper Wrap up |

The 2026 River Keeper season has officially come to a close! This year, the team paddled all 26 km of the urban Seine River three times throughout the season, helping keep it clean, healthy, and navigable for everyone to enjoy. One of our favourite parts of the job is chatting with the amazing people who enjoy the Seine as much as we do. Your appreciation for our work means so much and of course, we’re always happy to meet the furry friends we encounter along the way! It was a successful season: the canoe didn’t tip once, although it did take a serious hit from a 50-pound motor, leaving a rather impressive gash. Thankfully, the team came together to get it patched up and we were back on the water. We filled the canoe with garbage more times than we can count, worked with local schools, planted at Lagimodiere-Gaboury Park, Marlene Street Park and the Niakwa Rain Garden, and pulled hundreds upon hundreds of buckthorn, thistle, and burdock from various areas along the Seine River Greenway. Here are just a few of the large and interesting things we found in the river this season: In addition to the almost 100 bursting garbage bags, 2 couches, 3 TVS, 207 pieces of treated wood (over double what we pulled out the previous season), 26 chairs (triple what we pulled out the previous season),14 shoes, a toilet, were pulled from the river and so much more! A big thank-you to everyone who helped make this season such a success. Extra thank you's to those that donated directly to the river keeper program. See you on the river next year! - Monique Ellison, River Keeper Coordinator |
