Save Our Seine

Update on Restoration & Enhancement Pilot Project

We have been very busy with implementing our 2-year Restoration & Enhancement pilot project.

Thank you to the Province of Manitoba for funding our first year of this project through the Building Sustainable Communities Program.

The project is being overseen by Jennifer Sande (Project Manager), Kristin Kebalo (Project Coordinator), and Eric St-Onge (advisory committee Chairperson).

A major component of this project is to work towards removing European buckthorn from the Seine River greenway. On Sept. 26, a group of Environmental Design students from the University of Manitoba helped us in this goal at Morier Park. They learned about the risks posed by European buckthorn and helped us to remove a large number of these invasive plants. A big “thank you” goes out to the students for giving us a hand, and “thank you” to Chris Penner, Applied Ecologist, for guiding the group!

We are now spending some time to evaluate our progress so far and to plan for the second year of the project. We are hopeful that we will be able to expand our restoration efforts into other areas.

Part of this project is also to improve our internal operations, such as volunteer management. Towards that end, we are excited to soon be launching an online volunteer portal which will allow our volunteers to easily sign up for shifts and record their hours.
