River Keeper Summer Team (2026)

Save Our Seine is hiring youth between 15 and 29 years of age to join our River Keeper Summer Team. You will work with a small, supervised team to help care for the Urban Seine River and surrounding green spaces. This is hands-on, outdoor work where you will make a real difference in your community while building skills for future jobs.
POSITION DEPENDENT ON FUNDING
Position Details
Wage: $17.90/hour
Term: Late May / Early June to Late August 2026 (exact dates depend on funding)
Hours: Up to 40 hours per week (dependent on funding, schedule may vary)
Location: Urban Seine River and surrounding green spaces in Winnipeg
Specific Job Duties
Work outdoors in all conditions, including wet, muddy, hot, or rainy weather
Perform physical work, including lifting, walking, paddling, and working on uneven terrain
Remove garbage, trash, and woody debris from the Seine River and nearby water areas, often from a canoe
Clean and maintain walking trails, riverbanks, natural spaces, and habitat projects (weeding, watering, litter removal)
Maintain SOS habitat restoration sites
Remove invasive plant species along riverbanks
Assist with inventories and monitoring of natural features
Assist with tree and native plant planting and maintenance
Collect mapping and data using supplied equipment
Support community stewardship activities and assist volunteers as needed
Complete daily work logs and follow instructions from supervisors
Other related duties as assigned
Specific Job Requirements
Able to work outdoors in all weather conditions and environments, including water, mud, and uneven terrain
Able to perform physically demanding work (lifting, carrying, bending, paddling, and walking for extended periods)
Comfortable working in and around water, including from a canoe
Able to work as part of a team and follow direction from supervisors
Reliable, punctual, and able to complete assigned tasks
Willing to participate in community-facing activities and interact respectfully with the public and volunteers
Attend safety training and use personal protective equipment as required
Follow all safety policies and procedures (including Provincial Workplace Safety and Health requirements and SOS policies)
Assets (Not Required)
Experience paddling or working outdoors
Interest in the environment or natural sciences
Class 5 driver’s licence
Comfortable working in and around water
Eligibility
Be between 15 and 29 years of age
Live in Manitoba
Be legally able to work in Canada
Be available for the full work term

Summer Student Planner, Vermette–Seine River Forest
Help plan the future of Winnipeg’s Seine River urban forest.
Save Our Seine is hiring a Summer Student Planner to support the development of a concept plan for the Vermette–Seine River Forest, a large, ecologically significant natural area in southeast Winnipeg. Must be 30 years of age or younger.
This is a hands-on planning role where you will gain real-world experience in environmental planning, community engagement, and land-use analysis while working alongside experienced mentors.
POSITION CONTINGENT ON FUNDING APPROVAL
Position Details
$20/hour
16 weeks (May–August 2026, dependent on funding)
Full-time (35–40 hours/week, dependent on funding)
Winnipeg (hybrid)
About the Project
The Vermette–Seine River Forest is a large, partially undeveloped urban forest connected to the Seine River. The area includes multiple land parcels, important ecological features, and growing development pressure.
This project will develop a draft concept plan to guide future protection, access, and use of the area.
Primary Outcome
Develop a draft Vermette–Seine River Forest Plan, including:
Parcel and zoning mapping
Ecological and river connectivity analysis
Public access and land-use considerations
Recommended strategies and next steps
What You’ll Do
Review existing reports and planning documents
Support meetings with landowners, partners, and community members
Assist with a public meet-and-greet session
Conduct research, mapping, and analysis
Prepare content, visuals, and materials for the plan
